Mel & Matt’s Vintage Wedding – with Silk Street Lucky Four

Last November the Silk Street Lucky Four performed for Mel and Matt’s vintage wedding party at the Assembly Rooms in Norwich.

Mel first called Silk Street back in August and explained that they were planning a Gatsby style vintage wedding and needed some expert help with the music. Mel runs a set of swing dance classes in Norwich called Swing-Tonic, so it was great to be chosen to deliver authentic swing music for their special day!

Before the big day

We had several chats before the event where we discussed the room size, acoustics, art deco styling and repertoire.  Mel was concerned about the volume as the room was quite large so we supplied a PA system to amplify the sound. It is important that the bride and groom can visualise how the band will fit in to the atmosphere of the day. Here’s Mel describing how she could imagine her guests dancing to the music:-

“My heart has just gone all of a flutter listening to your audio clip, I can really imagine dancing to it”

It was also important to the bride and groom that we catered for both sets of guests, those who wanted to dance and those who wanted to sit and enjoy the music. Some of the guests had attended dance classes and practised Swing-Dance moves just for the wedding, so it was down to us to provide a strong dance floor tempo so everyone could show off their slick footsteps and tap dancing!

Choosing the songs

Mel selected some of her favourite songs in advance (including a first dance) from our repertoire list which included classic 1920s and 30s songs such as Alexander’s Ragtime BandEverybody Loves My BabyGet Happy and The Charleston. Mel and Matt also hired a DJ to play some alternative music after the band had finished.

Feedback

We were really pleased to receive an email from Mel and Matt letting us know how much everyone enjoyed the Silk Street Lucky Four’s performance.

“Sorry it’s taken us so long to write to you (we can’t believe that our wedding was over a month ago already!) but we just wanted to say thank you for playing at our 1920s/30s themed wedding in November. The musicians were outstanding, providing great music for our swing-dancing guests to dance to and a fantastic atmosphere for our non-dancing guests to enjoy. We will be sure to recommend you!”
